Planning and Monitoring System for the Army's Communications Network

The Danish Signals Planning Network Management System (HRN NMS) is a complete battlefield network planning and operational management system

HRN NMS uses the Systematic native C2IEDM SitaWare product as its core. The system is a new unified solution for planning, launching and monitoring the army's mobile communications network.

The Network Management System enables the signal troops to calculate the best possible placement of transmitters in relation to the surroundings, and it assigns transmitter frequencies to army operations so that there will be no conflicts with civilian frequencies.

The Danish Army Material Command expresses great satisfaction with its partnership with Systematic and is pleased that the project has been completed on schedule.

Key Features

  • Management of mobile trunk networks
  • Automated frequency management which enables operators to handle larger networks faster
  • EUROCOM compliant distributed planning and monitoring. These features provide easy planning and interaction with other EUROCOM compliant nations
  • Equipment independence which allows the customer flexibility in choosing signal equipment manufacturer
  • Information exchange with operational systems through a standardized interface which is MIP (Multilateral Interoperability Programme) compliant. The system facilitates uncomplicated information exchange which employs an intelligent exchange of updated information
  • Military messaging and standard office automation

HRN NMS enables mobile headquarters to establish a safe communications network

Efficient and Mobile Communication

When the Danish International Brigade is out in the field, it employs its own mobile communications network to establish safe communications between own units and allied units. It does so independently of civil infrastructure which may well be non-existing as is often the case. With HRN NMS, the army's operative units are ensured efficient, mobile communications under all circumstances. The system will be installed in the signal units' radio vehicles so that the system is available no matter where Danish units are to be deployed in the world.

Sergeant-in-chief René Sabinsky from the Army Materiel Command says, "In connection with the establishment and the working of the army's tactical communications system, we need to plan, launch and survey our signal units fast and efficiently", and he continues, "With this new HRN NMS system, the signal corps will have some of the most advanced planning and surveying tools there are."

Complete Overview through Interoperability

The value of HRN NMS really comes to play when it operates in a complete, operational context. HRN NMS includes MIP-compliant replication of plans and own/enemy situation picture through the IRIS Replication Mechanism product (IRM). IRM is used for MIP interoperability by several nations.

An automated frequency assignment tool aids the operator when choosing frequencies for radio links

Multiple Operators and High Security

The Distributed Planning and Monitoring feature of HRN NMS supports a EUROCOM organization where planning is performed in cooperation between multiple operators across signal unit sites. A roles and permissions system ensures that information is readily available without jeopardizing security. An automated frequency assignment tool is included to aid the operator in the complex task of choosing frequencies for radio links in a planned network deployment.

Flexibility with plugins

The Facility Control Module configures and monitors signal equipment, and is extendable with equipment plugins. Marconi-plugins are developed for the Danish Army, and others will be added as needed.

Stable Computing Experience with .net Platform

HRN NMS is built on the Microsoft .NET platform, offering a stable and modern computing experience. Leveraging the suite of Systematic defence products, including SitaWare and IRIS for Outlook, HRN NMS provides an intuitive and proven user interface with a fast learning curve. A complete set of instructor courses is included in the project.

Project Manager in Systematic, Jeppe Buk, explains that the Danish Army is about to receive a solution which is quite ahead when it comes to technology and functionality. HRN NMS is 100% based on Microsoft's .net technology. "We are convinced that the .net technology is mature enough to be used in critical applications such as HRN NMS that has to be up and running 24 hours 365 days a year if necessary".
