Storing, structuring and processing ELINT data

EWare is a software tool for maintaining and managing intelligence data about the status of the electromagnetic operating environment.

The core functionality consists of storing and maintaining information about emitters, platforms, weapons and intercepts. It also provides features for correlating both known and unfamiliar intercepts with emitters. This up-to-date information can then be passed on in the form most appropriate to different military equipment, different operating contexts and different types of mission.

Where it’s used

EWare software solutions are normally installed as part of large, centralised headquarters set-ups in which there are sufficient electronic warfare specialists to work on coordinating electronic warfare inputs and outputs.

EWare is often installed as part of a complete Electronic Warfare Operational Support Centre (EWOSC) facility software package. This ensures effective, co-ordinated inputting and processing electronic warfare data into a master database.

Data management

The EWare database manages four main types of data.

  • Emitters (radars, ECM systems/jammers, etc.)
  • Weapons (missiles, artillery systems, etc.)
  • Platforms (including land-based mobile units and stationary sites, surface vessels and submarines, aircraft, helicopters, UAVs and satellites)
  • Intercepts (consisting of data registered during operations, usually in the form of intercepted emitter transmissions).

EWare serves as the shared repository for all source information as soon as it has been through the complete cycle of research, validation, analysis and consolidation via agreed quality assurance procedures.

Platforms, weapons and emitters can be related to each other by using a “fit”, because specific platforms are known to be fitted with particular types of emitters and/or weapon systems, with particular signal specifications.

When an intercepted transmission has been identified as originating from a specific emitter, that intercept can immediately be associated to the relevant emitter (and associated platform, where necessary) within the EWare system.

Technical highlights
  • Used for researching, validating, analysing and consolidating ELINT from all available sources.
  • Ideal as a multi-service database that meets the specific requirements of individual armed forces.
  • Quickly displays the emitters and weapons known to be carried on a particular platform.
  • Descriptions and relationships between platform types and their associated emitters and weapon systems are stored in a “tree” structure.
  • Users can rapidly create, modify and update objects and intercepts, so the information can quickly be transferred to where it is needed.
  • Extensive query facilities for easy, rapid access to specific data.
  • System-wide updating to reflect any known changes in the data.
  • Efficient intercept management that makes it possible to rapidly process feedback from front-line forces.
  • Automatically prepares data for rapid transfer to front-line units, in an appropriate form.
  • Built in QA/Review cycle ensures the integrity of the available data.
  • Tagging data with source and security information helps make sure it is handled/released in accordance with appropriate security procedures.
