Lara has been working as an intern in Systematic’s Defence business unit, starting February 2010.
Lara’s thoughts on ...
... choosing Systematic for an internship
Last year, I used to pass Systematic’s office on my way downtown to meet my friends. It caught my attention at once and made me think of the company as a really nice workplace.
It also seemed a perfect place to apply for an internship. The position offered was related to the field of my studies and the fact that Systematic is people-centric and takes good care of its employees was very appealing.
I knew it wouldn’t be easy to get an internship in a company like Systematic, because such opportunity is of interest to many students. It also seemed a challenge as I don’t speak Danish that well. However, I still gave it a try – and look where I am now!
... being an employee compared with being a student
I think that university students often lack a chance to gain practical experience. Of course, you learn a lot while studying, but it’s mostly theoretical knowledge.
I am therefore very happy to have a chance to do an internship and see how everything works in practice. It certainly means having more responsibilities as well as facing real problems. But it pays off in the end, because you feel more prepared when it comes to real-life decision making.
... the best thing about being an intern in Systematic
The greatest thing about my job is that I learn a lot!
In the very beginning it seemed a bit overwhelming, as everything was completely new to me. However, I came here with a goal to learn as much as I can. So I’m trying to enjoy every single moment I get a chance to do so.
Another great thing is that I’m treated on equal terms with other employees in the company. I never feel alone or forgotten and everyone around is willing to give a helping hand whenever I need one.
... what she learned as an intern
Saying that I’m learning something new every day is by no means an exaggeration. I’m currently developing a new application, which means learning a new programming language as well as working with a new kind of hardware.
I also feel that I’m growing here, in personal terms. This is very motivating – it makes me want to learn more and perform even better.
... the most memorable experience as an intern
This will probably sound a bit ‘geeky’, but having my very first application running was something that struck me most so far. It was amazing to see everything going so smoothly. To tell the truth, I feel really lucky having a chance to work on this project. For me, it’s like being a kid in a candy store.
... a typical day at work
Most of my time at Systematic is spent working on my project. However, that’s not as boring as it might sound. Developing a new application is, in fact, very exciting! Of course, some days are better, some days are worse. But I really like getting back home feeling satisfied with what I did during the day.
Hanging out with colleagues during short breaks and having lunch together is also enjoyable. It also helps me improve my Danish.
