Tor started working in Systematic in January 2006 and is Senior Business Controller in Systematic’s finance department.

Tor’s thoughts on...

... training and career

- There is a great emphasis on informing the employees about the career paths in Systematic, which I think is the right thing to do. All employees can choose either one of them, and you are able to change career paths according to your interests and when you are seeking new challenges is a good way of developing your career.

All employees are continuously offered the opportunity to receive training and thereby further develop their skills, an opportunity which I’ve seized. I’ve attended several courses, for example on teamwork and personal development, and I teach some of the courses offered to our project managers.

Working in a company that has such a strong focus on developing its employees’ competences is very motivating and allows me to continuously develop myself personally as well as professionally.

… teamwork

- We are good at teamwork in Systematic. As a controller, I work closely with the projects, and it’s a great pleasure to experience the team members’ spirit and commitment. They clearly enjoy doing what they do.

When putting together a team, it’s important not to just focus on gathering the right number of people: It needs to be the right people with the right skills, and there needs to be an understanding and recognition of the members’ individual profiles and different ways of working. This is very much in focus in Systematic.

... CMMI

- Due to our work with CMMI, we live up to our value ‘forward-thinking’ as we are ahead of the development within our field. It’s only a question of time before more and more customers will demand that software providers adhere to standards such as CMMI.

I’m proud of being a part of company that’s accredited to an acknowledged standard such as CMMI and as a result provides software of a very high quality. - I’m proud of the fact that we make a difference to our customers and that they can trust us and our software.

... the greatest thing about the job

- The greatest thing about the job is that my work day is completely unpredictable.

Also, there is a readiness to change in Systematic with the aim of improving our business and processes. This means that my tasks change continuously, and I’ll never risk doing the same thing day after day, month after month.

Furthermore, it’s fantastic to work in a company where the strategy and values you wish to adhere to are in fact implemented and followed by top management and throughout the organisation.

... working in an international company

- I appreciate the fact that Systematic’s an international company. It means that we in our day-to-day activities have to take many different aspects into consideration such as culture and political structures of other countries.

The international aspect of Systematic’s business also brings exiting challenges and the opportunity to work with people from other cultures than your own and experience their approach to software development, which varies from country to country. My job entails a lot of visits to the different offices in the Systematic group, and it’s very interesting to experience their different management styles and to see how we differ from each other, despite belonging to the same company.

... contributing to society

- In Systematic, we are very conscious of our responsibility in society; a characteristic which I really appreciate that the company I work in possesses

One really great example of this is the fact that we’ve initiated a project aiming to employ soldiers wounded in service as software testers, thereby giving them the chance to pursue a career in the civilian world when their injuries curtail their military careers.

We take in many interns, and we collaborate with a number of educational institutions on various projects.

Systematic has made room for the employees to make a charity association, which the company supports financially. We sponsor many different projects and have a strong focus on improving work life for the weaker groups in society.

... working in a project and team-oriented company

- We’ve a very dynamic approach to working in project teams. It’s fantastic to see how the projects can change size quickly and smoothly. It’s relatively easy for the employees to change projects; they’re able to move from one project to another and get started right away with their new roles. There’s a great acknowledgement and understanding of each employee’s competences, and Systematic makes use of them to the fullest when creating a team.

The team spirit in Systematic is strong. One example of how this is manifested is at lunchtime. I’ve never sat down at a table with people I didn’t know, not being able to find something to talk with them about. We all belong to the Systematic team, which means that we’ve common interests and a shared commitment.
