With emphasis on current activities throughout, the course includes EW definitions, relationships and the principles of ESM, ECM and EPM
Course Overview
EW in maritime, land and air operations including emerging EW roles, EW in EBAO, CRO, EWMS, EWCC, EWOS and SEWOC are discussed. EW data support issues including databases and data release to NATO, PfP and partner nations are covered. NATO organization is described. Issues around Joint Battlefield Spectrum Management are also introduced and discussed. Planning, mutual support and EW training/exercises are used to consolidate training. EW all-source intelligence, responsibilities, relationships and training including implementing the lessons learned since 1991 are covered. EMCON planning within a CRO scenario is included.

PfP and NATO Staff Officers with responsibility for EW Coordination Cell/Sigint EW Operational Centre (EWCC/SEWOC) Chief in a NATO-led Crisis Response Operation (CRO), or commanding an EW unit assigned to a NATO-led CRO'.

- Electronic Support Measures (ESM) including Electronic Support (ES)
- Electronic Counter Measures (ECM) including Electronic Attack (EA)
- Electronic Warfare Protective Measures (EPM) including Electronic Protect (EP)
- EW in maritime operations
- EW in land operations
- EW in air operations including Suppression of Enemy Air Defences (SEAD)
- Emerging Roles for EW including EW defence of civil aircraft
- EW in Crisis Response Operations (CRO)
- EW Mutual Support (EWMS), the EWCC and SEWOC
- EW data support to front line forces
- EW data release to PfP nations and other allies in CRO
- EW planning
- The organisation of NATO and its commands structure
- EW support to rapid response and expeditionary forces
- EW training and exercises
- EW and all source intelligence - responsibilities, relationships and training
- Implementing EW lessons learned (from operations since 1991)
- Emission Control (EMCON) planning scheme (CRO scenario)
Skills Learned
Attendees should understand at staff officer level; the current and future employment of EW within NATO and PfP programmes, the issues related to intelligence within EW, data and databases, the release of data from the perspective of an EW Staff Officer or EW Detachment Commander, the Joint EW effort at Staff Officer level, coalition force coordination and the EW lessons learned in recent joint operations, the issues regarding EMCON planning in a CRO environment and the issues related to researching and briefing on emerging military and non-military roles for EW (including the military applications of EW in non-warfare operations).
Course Prerequisites
None, however a background in EW would be an advantage.
